Sundew (Drosera rotundafolia) A carnivorous plant in the same family as the famous venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Sundew is found in some bogs and wet places on Beaver Island. Notice the hairs that stick out from the spoon shaped leaves. These hairs are sticky and can trap small insects that land on the leaves. The plant secretes enzymes so that nutrients can be absorbed by the plant as the insect decays. A tea or tincture of this plant was used for coughs and asthma. The plant has also been used as a poultice to treat warts. Furthermore, this plant produces some compounds which act as antibiotics. We remind you to never ingest any plant without consulting a doctor first.
